How to Pipe Buttercream Roses Directly on a Cake – Step-by-Step Floral Cake Tutorial

There’s something timeless and romantic about a cake adorned with delicate, blooming roses. If you're looking to elevate your cake decorating skills, this Dreamy Piped Roses Cake tutorial is the perfect technique to master.

Unlike traditional buttercream flowers that are piped separately and transferred later, in this method, we’re piping the roses directly on the cake—giving it a beautifully organic look.

Video Below 👇 Only 4 mins long

Tools Needed

  • Wilton 125 piping nozzle (for the outer petals)

  • Wilton 104 piping nozzle (for the inner petals)

  • Wilton 352 leaf nozzle (for leaves)

  • Piping bags

  • Green-coloured buttercream for stems and leaves

  • Flower-toned buttercream (Rosy pinks, Whites, Peaches or your desired colours)

Step-by-Step: How to Pipe Roses Directly on Cake

1. Pipe the Outer Petals with Wilton 125 (large tear shaped nozzle)

As in the video, start with the Wilton 125 tip to create the outer petals. Hold the piping bag so that the narrow end of the nozzle faces outwards and the wider end touches the cake

2. Add the Inner Petals with Wilton 104 (medium tear shaped nozzle)

Switch to Wilton 104 for the inner petals. This slightly smaller petal tip will help give your roses buds a smaller delicate look.

Add the Greenery

3. Pipe the Stems

To bring your roses to life, use green-coloured buttercream in a piping bag with the end snipped off to create a small hole. This allows you to draw slender, natural-looking stems directly on the cake. Gently squeeze and draw lines from the base of each rose downwards or in graceful curves.

4. Pipe the Leaves with Wilton 352

For the final touch, use the Wilton 352 leaf nozzle with the green buttercream. Hold the nozzle flat against the cake, squeeze, and pull away to create beautiful, ruffled leaves at the base of each rose and along the stems.

Why This Technique Stands Out

Piping directly on the cake not only saves time but also gives your cake a more organic and artistic feel. It’s perfect for those who want to skip the flower nail and go straight to designing their masterpiece. Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about watching a blank canvas transform into a dreamy rose garden with just a few piping tips and some colour.

So grab your piping bags and let your creativity bloom—your dreamy roses cake awaits! :)
