What You Need for Easy Buttercream Flower Painting:

  • Smooth, chilled cake (covered with buttercream)

  • Toothpick (for tracing)

  • Buttercream in piping bags

  • Scissors (to cut bag tips)

  • Food-safe painting brush (soft bristles)

🌸 Step-by-Step Guide to Brush Painted Buttercream Flowers

Step 1: Trace a Flower Shape on the Cake

Start by lightly tracing a five-petal flower onto your cake using a toothpick. This will serve as your guide for the petals. Make sure your cake surface is smooth and slightly chilled for best results.

This technique works great for buttercream cakes, whether round, square, or even sheet cakes.

Step 2: Prepare Your Buttercream Piping Bag

Fill a piping bag with coloured buttercream of your choice (pink, yellow, white – anything you like).
Cut a small hole at the end of the piping bag — the hole size controls the thickness of the petals, so adjust based on the look you want.

Step 3: Pipe Along the Traced Petals

Following your toothpick lines, pipe buttercream along the outer edges of each petal. This doesn’t have to be perfect — the magic happens in the next step!

Step 4: Use a Brush to Smooth and Paint

Using a clean, food-safe painting brush, gently smooth the buttercream inward — from the edge of the petal towards the center. This creates a beautiful, brushed effect that resembles hand-painted flowers.

Step 5: Add the Center Details

Once the petals are done, add  dots of contrasting buttercream in the center. You can use a piping bag with a small hole cut at the end.
Sprinkle a few edible pearls or colourful sprinkles for a whimsical, elegant touch.

Step 6: Pipe Leaves and Filler Buds

Finish your design by piping leaves using buttercream

To add dimension, include tiny buttercream buds
