Essential Buttercream Cake Decorating Tools

Buttercream Cake Decorating Tools

Are you confused about all the different Cake Decorating Tools you need to purchase before getting started in Buttercream Cake Decorating?

Here is a comprehensive list of Essential Cake Decorating Materials below to make your life easier :)

  • Piping bags - These are used for piping flowers and patterns on cake. The only thing you need to bear in mind is to purchase good quality piping bags that wouldn't burst open when you apply pressure as you pipe. You can even try reusable silicone piping bags so you can wash and use them again.

  • Piping nozzles - There are several brands of nozzles available for purchase - Wilton, PME JEM, etc. Always go with the shape of the nozzle (as you see in my free tutorials). And you can buy similar shapes (any brand). Again you don't need a whole nozzle set. In our Online School, we use 5 different nozzles to create 25 different flowers. So I always recommend my students to buy nozzles individually depending on the flowers you like to pipe.

  • Gel colours or Oil based colours - There are several brands available. My favourites are Wilton and Colourmill.  Try to avoid liquid based colours as these will thin the buttercream making it difficult to pipe flowers.
  • Coupler - These are small white plastic tools that you attach to the end of the piping bags, which would help you to change the nozzles without having to change the whole piping bag. This is particularly handy when we are piping multiple flowers using the same colour buttercream.

  • Flower Nail - This is an excellent tool for piping buttercream flowers ahead of time. You can stick a greaseproof paper on the flower nail and pipe flowers on it. You can then remove these greaseproof papers with piped flowers and freeze them for 15 minutes before arranging the frozen flowers on the cake or cupcakes.
  • Flower Lifter - This is like a set of small scissors that lets to lift the flower up and place it on a cake. You can also use a small set of scissors too.
  • Palette Knives - A set of artist palette knives are great for painting flowers and smoothing the buttercream cake. You can purchase these from the art stores.
  • Cake Turntable - An excellent tool for smoothing the cakes. I prefer to use a metal one as this lets you turn the cake smoothly and efficiently.
  • Cake Smoother - An excellent tool for smoothing the buttercream cake. I prefer to use plastic ones as these are light weight and easy to manoeuvre. This is the PME smoother.

These are the absolute essential items to purchase first if you'd like to design buttercream cakes.

Whether you are a beginner or a pro in Cake Decorating, I hope you found this write up useful :)
